Phosphates are chemical compounds containing phosphorous. In natural water bodies phosphates act as nutrients for aquatic plants and can cause increased algae growth if oversupplied. In drinking water systems and cooling towers, phosphates can be added as a corrosion inhibitor to form a protective coating on metal surface to prevent corrosion.
