Total dissolved solids are measured in parts per million (ppm), or the equivalent notation, and relates to the amount of inorganic and organic substances in the water. It can be accurately determined by gravimetric methods used in a laboratory. If the dissolved solids are mainly inorganic compounds such as minerals and salts, the electrical conductivity is a close (within 10%) approximation of TDS.
