Biocides are chemical substances that have the ability to kill microorganisms through the chemical process of oxidation. Usually these oxidising biocides are based on the halogen family, i.e., they contain chlorine or bromine. Oxidising biocides are typically used in cooling towers but also in potable water distribution systems at a low (continuous dosing) or elevated concentration (shock dosing in case of bacterial outbreaks).
