Solubility of a substance refers to its ability to dissolve in a solvent such as water. In water certain metals/metal compounds can exist in soluble and insoluble form. When sampling and testing, it is often required to establish not only the total amount of a certain metal, but also the amount in solution (soluble) and insoluble part. The total amount of metal is comprised of the soluble and insoluble amount. Filtration can be used to separate the soluble from the insoluble parts.
